Final piece I made in floristry class. I just completed a floristry course. I learned so much and loved it! I got to do things I don’t normally get to do, like buying flowers from wholesale markets, spray painting flowers, using floral foam, wiring flowers. It was a great learning experience to have and I must say, after walking a minute in florists shoes- kudos to florists- their job is not easy! I used to think florists had it easy with their ability to order pretty much any flower variety, in any colour , any time of the year through wholesalers with access to imported flowers. But of course, it’s never that simple! Florists might need to order weeks in advance.The colour you order from the wholesaler, may not be the colour you get; or you may not be able to get what you want at all, or flowers are damaged /diseased, and then because of chemical sprays used on them you need to wear gloves/ be washing hands constantly.
As an organic seasonal flower grower, I’ve always felt there’s so many limitations to what I can offer. Our cool climate here limits our growing season, as a certified “old girl” there’s only so much growing area I can physically (and mentally) cope with. Growing in the open field can mean storm damage. Because I wont use nasty chemicals, sometimes the bugs win!
So I’ve come away from floristry class realising, regardless of which side of the floristry fence we sit on, we all face limitations of some sort. I’ve also gained a renewed sense of immense appreciation for the beautiful flowers our little garden produces for us- she does a stellar job! And so too, do all the florist’s out there- hats off to you!⭐️
